Diagnosed With Hernia? Here’s What You Need to Know.

A hernia occurs when an internal organ like intestine or any other body part protrudes through a weak spot or wall of the muscle that contains it. Such herniated organs that are pushed out, resulting in the formation of a bulge are mainly found in the upper thigh, groin region, and abdomen.

A report by Healthengine indicates that 80% of the global population suffers from inguinal hernias and almost 10% from an incisional hernia. Also, hernia is a problem not only caused in adults but found in infants as well.

Some of the patients housing hernia can get rid of the problem by following a particular lifestyle and medication, whereas certain patients require immediate medical assistance to resolve the problem.

Symptoms of Hernia

In most cases, patients usually record a painless swelling that doesn’t cause many problems and does not require immediate medical attention. Whereas if the patients suffer from the following symptoms and neglect them, the chances of lifetime risks may arise.

You are suspected of housing hernia if you have the following symptoms:

  • Severe pain while lifting objects
  • A bulge in the rectum or groin
  • Aching and burning sensation
  • The frequent feel of bowel obstruction
  • Pressure and weakness in the groin
  • Vomiting and nausea in case of strangulated hernia

Causes of Hernia

A hernia can be caused due to various reasons from person to person. There exist several reasons for hernia with the most common being:

  • Pregnancy
  • Damage or weakness in the abdominal muscle
  • Doing heavy exercises and lifting heavyweights
  • Chronic cough
  • Weakening of the abdominal muscles with age

Treatments for Hernia

Depending on the severity of the patient’s condition, the doctor recommends either of the surgical procedure:

Laparoscopic surgery

Laparoscopic surgery is the most preferred treatment for treating hernia that causes no wound and doctors operate by making a small incision under general anaesthesia.

The process successfully pushes the hernia into the abdominal cavity and then places a mesh over it, which strengthens the abdominal wall.

This treatment is preferred over the other treatments because it is a one-day procedure and causes no or mild pain. The patient can resume his or her routine activities for two days.

Patients who undergo the laparoscopic surgery have a faster recovery period, but it is recommended for them to have regular medical follow-ups for at least 3 weeks.

Traditional surgery

Traditional surgery refers to the open surgery in which the treatment of hernia is accomplished by making a significant cut in the abdomen under the general anaesthesia. A hernia is sutured, and then the wound is stitched.

Though it successfully cures the hernia patients, it is avoided due to the more extended hospital stay and recovery period. Any patient undergoing this surgery has to approximately stay for 3-4 days in hospital and 3-4 weeks for resuming their healthy lifestyle.

Both the treatments have equal success rates, but your doctor will suggest the one that is suitable for your condition and helps you get rid of hernia as soon as possible.

How alarming is a hernia?

Leaving hernia after it’s diagnosis is nothing less than a ticking bomb. It will gradually grow and increase the pain, which becomes unbearable. The symptoms start worsening with the obstruction of bowel movements, fatigueness, nausea and constipation.

Even the nearby tissues can get affected as the neglected hernia generates pressure on them, which leads to swelling and pain.

Most alarming phase occurs when the blood flow to the intestine is not enough that causes strangulation hernia. Such hernia are life-risking and create irreversible damage to the body.

So, it becomes crucially important to pay close attention to the signs and symptoms your body shows in the early stages and get them examined to avoid regretting later.

Prevention is better than cure

Some of the causes of hernia cannot be avoided, but there are some that need can be addressed that will reduce the chances of occurrence of hernia.

Follow these simple steps to avoid hernia or recover fast if you did undergo any hernia removal treatment:

  • Maintain a healthy balanced diet
  • Quit smoking
  • Increase the intake of fibrous foods
  • Avoid heavy lifting
  • Regular medical checkups
